An hour later the children were listening to Terry reading their stories. Jenny sat down with Elizabeth to a glass of digestivo. Stan was cleaning up. Jenny asked: "Give me some background in the tantra thing? I know there are all sorts of practises, but how do you see it? I have to warn you, where I grew up yoga, but especially Tantra, was regarded as something of the devil."

Elizabeth smiled. "Many Hindus have the same idea of Tantra. Look, a lecture will take hours if not days. In its simplest form it boils down to this: The world is hard to understand and harder to manage. Hinduism sees life as an endless round of life and death, rebirth and suffering. If you can find a way to free yourself from this wheel of life, unify yourself with the divine, you can dissolve the drop of your soul in the immensity of god. Now, the question is how to achieve this freedom called moksha, this nirvana. Traditional Hinduism has set up rules to guide the believer towards this ideal, to avoid evil. There are rules regarding what may be eaten, whom you may touch, rules contained in the caste system, the veneration of cows, and much, much more. Within this structure yoga in various forms was developed as a form of prayer, but also a form of exercise, to guide the body towards health, towards avoidance of evil, of worldly encumbrances. Jenny nodded. "I thought the idea of yoga as religion was just right-wing ...

... religious propaganda?"

"No, there are religious implications when one looks at it from a certain angle. But there are also the exercise aspects to be considered. The point is, in all this there is a trend, a streak of denial of the world similar to the Catholic system of the middle ages, where believers were encouraged to cast off this world, to pray and meditate so they can rise above the evils and temptations of this world. I imagine you are familiar with that?"

She grinned. "Sounds awfully like the chaplain we had when I was small. A real hellfire and damnation preacher."

"Isn't it interesting how totally different religions share the same characteristics? Now, the practise of tantra is, as you can imagine, very complex, and I know just a little about it. But it boils down to the belief that nirvana is not to be achieved through denial of the world, of the senses, of reality, but instead by embracing it. Some traditional tantric rituals involve consorting with the dead, eating beef, which is considered a deadly sin, and also consorting with people from another caste. Sex with someone from another caste is considered a way of breaking the bonds of the traditional system, and from there the concept of developing sex as method to achieve a small nirvana, a uniting with the cosmos, with creation, is just a small step."

"I think I get it. So these people studied sex in church? Just joking, but there is something of that, no?"
