    ... embarrassing."

David chuckled, "Take a moment. Coffee?"

    "Please."

As David was making coffee I went and got a framed print from my bedroom. It had been pushed back a little on the shelf, so I doubted David had noticed it. I propped it on the table and thanked him when he brought the coffee and some chocolate digestives over.

    "Emergency biccies," he justified.

"Sure," I didn't take one though. Just cupped my coffee and nodded at the picture. David eyed it with a curious expression.

A tall, slim, very young red headed white lady, and a large, athletic looking black man with their arms around each other grinned into the camera.

"I'm going to tell it how it developed. Makes more sense that way." David just nodded. I indicated the photograph. "My Mom, Rebecca. She's only nineteen there. And my step-dad, Lee Franklin."

David nodded again and sipped his coffee.

"They died in a car accident when I was two and a half," I smiled a little when David automatically reached out and stroked my arm. "Thanks. I don't remember them. I was raised by my maternal grandparents in Fort Lauderdale. They told me that Mom didn't know who my father was, some kid at college, and that Lee Franklin had taken me on when they married, but then had been drunk driving and that's why the accident happened. They hated him, and were always bitter about my mom having got pregnant so young."

I took a breath. "My grandparents weren't warm people. They were strict and narrow minded. ...
... But they gave me a home, taught me to cook and garden, gave me dancing. I'll always be grateful for that, as I should be."

    "But?" David prompted.

    "Not so fast."

    "Sorry."

I huffed a half laugh. "Fast forward to me at fourteen. I'm having a sleep-over at Drew's. We're playing chess. I'm crap, but he was obsessed and still is. He checkmates me and I blurt out, 'I'm gay'. No reason, totally out of the blue."

    "How long had you known?"

I shrugged a little. "I'd wondered for a while. Couple of years. But I had been sure for about six months. Terrified someone would find out and the shit would hit."

I grinned now, "Drew kinda tipped his head to one side and asked, 'Do you fancy me?' and I was all, 'What? No! Don't be weird.' He just smirked and said, 'Tell me if that changes.' Then crawled over the chessboard, sending pieces flying everywhere and hugged me." I broke off, my voice still shaky with emotion well over twenty years later.

"He sounds like a really good friend."

    "You have no idea."

"Where does Closet come from? I assume it's a joke on your gayness and his not?"

I sniggered, "Yea. Camping trip. It was freezing and he was all snuggled up to me trying to keep warm. I told him he must be a closeted gay. We had just recently come across the term, I guess we were about fifteen, so crazy mature. He laughed so hard it just stuck as a nickname."

David just smirked into his mug.

"Anyhow, zip forward another couple of years. I'm sixteen. Mainly ...
