Saving Him from Himself Ch. 00 - Prologue

Author's note: This is a prologue to the main story containing information about the background of the characters. There are no erotic happenings in this chapter, it simply sets the scene. If you want to get right into the action, I suggest you skip straight to chapter 01.

Charlie Hawthorne sat in his room one evening reflecting on his life and sighed. At 22 years old, he hadn't exactly reached his full potential. He didn't have a job, he was socially isolated, he couldn't even drive, he had never had a girlfriend, and he didn't have any real friends. Unless you counted his sisters.

He knew he had no right to complain of course. He was a Hawthorne, a member of one of the richest and most powerful families in the world. The family business, the Hawthorne corporation, had their fingers in many pies, from IT and computer manufacturing to information gathering and data brokering to who knew what else. He didn't have a job? He didn'tneed a job. His stepsister Melody provided him with a generous allowance so he could buy all the video games, movies, action figures and comics that he could ever possibly want.

But that was exactly the point. He was a man now, not a teenage boy. But their parents policy of isolationism had taken its toll. His stepparents Jack and Veronica Hawthorne had had one biological child, his sister Melody. But the birth had been terrible and the doctors warned his mother that another pregnancy and childbirth could be a threat to her life. Their ...

... mother had always wanted a large family though, so they had decided to adopt orphans, each from a different orphanage. His sisters Karen, Meiko, Lucy and then finally him. He was 10 years old at the time, living in an orphanage his whole life, always passed over by potential adopters. He had always been a loner and never got on with the staff or other children, he had no pleasant memories of his time there. But then he had been adopted and suddenly he had a family. His new parents had remained a bit distant but his new sisters had welcomed him warmly. He was the last one to be adopted so they had all forged a loving bond of sistership already and they were happy to add him to the mix and accepted him lovingly as their brother. Charlie smiled wistfully as he remembered childhood games of tag and hide and seek. They had all been thick as thieves once. But things had changed since then, he sighed.

Shortly after he had been adopted, there had been an incident with another extremely wealthy family. Some criminals had kidnapped their daughter, demanding a ransom in the millions. The family had paid them off but the kidnappers were paranoid, thinking the family were conspiring with the police and they made a break for it, taking the girl with them. There was no choice but to call the police now. The cops got into a car chase with them and they ended up in a hostage situation when the perps had holed up in an abandoned building.
