Sandy and I felt abandoned. Neither of us knew why Karin - her mother and my wife - had left. We’d been a happy family for the past twenty years. For the past five months my now ex-spouse Karin had been off gallivanting with a surfer dude about twenty years younger than her. That left my step-daughter Sandy and me to fend for ourselves. Karin hadn’t even bothered to call us for the past month, and we had no idea how to reach her. All we knew was that she had decided to leave us in search for a new life. “We’ll be OK, Daddy”, Sandy had said to me, “I can cook and clean and you can do the groceries and take the garbage out.” We made a good team, and I was proud of my step-daughter. So far, it had worked out pretty well with both of us pulling our weight whenever and wherever needed. Sandy had a lot of common sense and worldly know-how, but I knew that she missed her mother as much as I did. She seemed somewhat more fragile than she had been when we were a real family, seeking greater intimacy with me now that her mother was gone. I could only just see her silhouette standing at the foot of the bed, but I knew from the tone of her voice that she needed reassurance. “There’s nothing to be scared about,” I told her calmly, “It’s just a storm. It will pass soon.” Just as I had finished my sentence, a lightning bolt struck nearby, followed by a massive boom that shook the house. I was shocked at how close and powerful the storm appeared to be, but I tried to keep my composure despite the fact that she probably couldn’t even see me in the darkness. Sandy shrieked, and after a few moments asked “Is it OK if I sleep next to you?” Her question wasn’t really a question, as any father should know. My daughter was distressed and in need of someone to protect her. Still, I felt uneasy about her sleeping beside me for the simple reason that she was female, very attractive and already too close to me for comfort. I certainly wasn’t oblivious to her as she grew up, having seen her hips widening and her breasts growing over the past few years. Her development as a young woman was probably typical, although I felt that somehow I had to try harder than most fathers to not be attracted to their step-daughters. Sandy was simply beautiful to me, with her long blonde hair and deep blue eyes, a slim body and yet fairly large ...
