Emily could see the thick, green haze from miles away as it engulfed the town she was travelling to. Old apartment blocks were the only buildings visible as the fog descended on the streets of Sunnydale. She had heard myths of these green clouds of smog but if she was to stand any chance of tracking down her best friend, she would have to travel deep into it. As the sun began to hide behind the horizon, barrels filled with fire began to light up around the area. Howls from creatures nearby started to be heard and immediately, she took cover inside an old, abandoned gas station along route forty-four. She sat with her back against the wall for hours whilst noises came from just outside the building. Her eyes were focused on the door throughout the hours and before long she began to feel drowsy. Trying to fight the sleepiness, she began to read the legends of the ghost people. After the bombs struck around the Earth, emergency services were issued prototype hazmat suits to protect themselves from the lethal radioactive gases. These suits weren’t effective as everyone who wore them began to suffer the same fate as the ghouls but on a much smaller scale. After a century of nuclear fallout, Earth began to become more habitable but in certain places remained a thick, green cloud which was home to the monsters known as the ghosts. Emily slammed the book shut as more screeches came from outside. Despite her fear of what was in store for her, she began to lie on the cold linen floor ...
... of the gas station. More screeches followed whilst her eyes started to close slowly. Before long, she was asleep. As she slept, images of the ghost people wandering the streets of Sunnydale began to enter her head followed by her best friend being in trouble. The next morning, the sunlight began to peak in through the barricaded windows and the growls started to fade as the sun moved higher. Emily woke up in panic, she panted loudly and cold sweat ran down her face and neck. For a few seconds, she seemed lost before remembering her surroundings. Shielding her eyes from the bright sunlight with one hand, she pulled a small mirror from her rucksack and held it up with the other. She moved her hand from her forehead and rustled around in her rucksack some more. Her hand ran over the various weapons and canned food she had before coming to a stop on a small, wooden hairbrush. Emily quickly pulled the brush out and began to groom her long, black hair. The thoughts of her friend were still wandering around in her mind as she brushed thoroughly. She knew she had to find her quick. Her dark brown eyes glanced at the mirror sharply before she threw both objects back in her bag. With a quick sigh, she stood up and opened the door slowly. The heat seemed to hit her petite body like a hammer as she stepped onto the fractured tarmac outside. She looked all around, seeing nothing but the barren wastelands outside of Sunnydale. A slight breeze began to brush against her cheeks as she set off ...
