... the next, he felt human, like he connected to me. I wanted him. I thought of the night in France. It was achingly sweet. Suzanne’s serve whizzed past before I had time to react, taking the score to deuce. I headed into position, ready for the next one. My mind was full, too full, and it was by some inconceivable miracle that I returned her serve. The rally was short and I got the point. The court was packed with spectators and at championship point they were going wild. I finally glanced at Mats. He was wearing sunglasses. There was something so stiff, so cold about him. It hurt. He acknowledged me with a small nod. Jack. Mats. Maybe Jack did need to learn the hard way. Maybe he was bluffing about the video. Either way, I couldn’t hurt other people for him. He was responsible for himself. I glanced at Mats again, at my brothers in the crowd. I focused my attention on the game and all my problems faded to nothing. Suzanne’s serve landed out. The second one was slower, easier. The ball went back and forth, a yellow blur before one of her backhands failed to get over the net. It was over too fast and I had won. *** Mats followed me into my hotel room. “Fucking hell, Lauren. Just be happy.” I tried for a smile. “I am.” The preliminary celebration was over but there would be more parties, more friends, more family members. Forget – him.” “You still annoyed at me?” The ghost of a smile lurked behind his frown. “No. You won. We’re good.” He shook his head. “I just don’t know why you would even consider hurting yourself for him. He’s nothing, he’s a quitter, he’s not worth it, and he’s not good enough for you, for any of this confusion.” “He has a tape,” I blurted out. “A stupid fucking sex tape from years ago.” “So?” Mats looked untroubled. “So, if he gets half a chance it’ll be on the internet.” “So?” Mats asked again. “Like it matters. You’re the victim. People will be on your side. Hell, this will probably get you more sponsors.” I stared at him. “Mats, the whole world could see me naked. It’s fucking mortifying.” He laughed, enviously carefree. “So? You look hot naked. Trust me, Lauren. We’ll get through it.” And for some reason, I believed him. I believed in him. In the grand scheme of things, Jack’s threat suddenly seemed petty. I’d already been through so much scandal and gossip thanks to our relationship and now that the problem faced me full-on, it seemed smaller than before. “You did the right thing, Lauren,” Mats finally said. “I know I’ve been tough but you deserved this.” “I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been tough,” I said and I faltered. The words were too soft for us and it seemed awkward to hear them. Mats was watching me. I felt nervous. The tension ...
