... “There goes my thirty-five dollar trip to the hairdresser,” she said ruefully. I began to chuckle and soon we were laughing hysterically, clinging to each other to stay on our feet on the slippery shower floor. When we got out of the shower we were exhausted. We dried each other off and fell into bed, too tired to brush our teeth or put on our pajamas. In minutes we were both fast to sleep. She was still asleep when I woke in the morning. I dressed and snuck out quietly to take a walk. I was in a thoughtful mood. How wonderful it had been to get away, just the two of us, to be who we were, each of us comfortable with each other and everything we did together. Being able to put the children, and her mother’s obvious disapproval of me, or us, or whatever, out of our thoughts. To get away from bills and appointments and all the necessary detritus of life. It had been only a day and a night, but we had spent it as if we were on a desert island far off in the Pacific Ocean somewhere. Somewhere where we were the only two people alive. And she made it all so wonderful. I wondered how many men could say that they were as ...
... lucky as I was. I remembered the day we bumped heads. It had led to all this and so much more. She was awake and dressed when I got back to the room. I kissed her and fondled her breasts through her shirt and then we packed. We skipped breakfast. Her mother had made it clear we had to be back by noon. On the drive home Jen was unusually quite and I began to worry that something was wrong. “How do you feel,” I said to break the silence? “Used,”she sighed. “Completely used.” My heart sank. “I did hurt you!” She shook her head. “I said, ‘used,’ Rob, not ‘abused.’ You would never abuse me. It’s a wonderful thing to feel so completely used by the man I love. I don’t know if it’s a woman thing but it’s certainly my thing.” “Are you sure I didn’t hurt you,” I insisted. “No, not really,” she said squeezing my hand. “I mean, I’m a little tender but that’s all. I’ll be fine by tomorrow. And it was all wonderful Rob. You worry too much.” We drove for a minute or to two in silence. “Don’t fret I’ll be ready for the next time,” she said with a smile. She reached over and squeezed my arm. “Let’s not wait so long for next time.”
