... pearl ropes went all wonky. Blanche was slim, but just so delightfully curved. Vital, and voluptuous, with wild, uncontainable, curls. Polly pressed her lips. Still, the girl really could have made more effort with her hair, tonight. Not that it made much difference to Leonardo it seemed, who winked lasciviously at his dance partner, only to get a rather flirtatious gloved slap in return. Polly decided to intercede, striding over to them. “Sir, the ambassador’s wife would like to dance with you, too.” Leonardo, who had been grinning like a schoolboy at Blanche, frowned at Polly. He nodded, straightened his tie and wandered off. Blanche stamped her foot and Polly raised her eyebrows. “Drip! Did you just… stamp your foot?” “Oh, bugger off.” Blanche lunged for a passing glass. “You’ve had quite enough, my dear.” Polly pulled a showy smile, then sensing a storm, left her alone. # Blanche wandered around the glitzy fishbowl of a ballroom, trying to look moodily absorbed in the skyline. Lain reminded her of the handsome prince she had adored in a childhood book of fairy tales. Her stomach flip-flopped whenever he caught her eye, as if the fairy tale had suddenly popped into life. She wasn’t sure whether this undid, or doubled, the pain of losing Polly to him. Looks and power were a potent combination, though; she had to admire her lover’s taste at least. Blanche mischievously replayed the moment, swapping herself with Polly. Taking it all in. She found the obscene thoughts oddly comforting. Smirking into her glass, she guessed he would have just discovered the secreted underwear in his jacket pocket. Her ...
