... the door and then one of her neighbours passed by and she unlocked the door and went in. The apartment was quiet. “Jeff?” Her voice sounded normal. No giveaways there. She checked her reflection in the mirror in the hall. Dishevelled, but then again, she had been running. There was the sound of clattering from the kitchen and Isla kicked off her shoes and reached the door just as it opened. Jeff stood in front of her, still in his work clothes, his shirt untucked and his hair dishevelled. Behind him was Colleen, the standard secretarial smile on her face as she slipped papers into her briefcase. “Sorry I’m so late,” Isla said hurriedly. “I kind of missed the bus. Twice.” “Ah. That’s okay,” Jeff said, and he opened the kitchen door a little wider. “I figured you were working late.” Isla looked past him to where Colleen was standing. The redhead looked clean and tidy, as if she’d just come from the office. “Colleen just came by to drop some papers off,” Jeff said and on any other day, Isla would have believed him in a heartbeat. But today was different. Today she noticed that his belt was hanging slack and that ...
... every other button on Colleen’s blouse was undone. She saw the covert glances they sneaked at one another. She could practically smell the sweat and tension in the room and she marvelled at how blind she had been to it all before. The weight inside her lifted. “Well, I’d best be going,” Colleen said brusquely, throwing Isla a smile. “Oh no, stay, please,” Isla said. “I just realised I forgot something at the office. I’ll have to run back. You should keep Jeff company.” Jeff frowned. “But I got tickets to the opera. It’s our anniversary, remember?” “I’ll be back before you know it,” Isla said. “I’ll take a taxi.” She hurried away before they could protest and ran into the bedroom, rifling through drawers for her passport. Her hand closed around it and she went back into the hall, picked up her purse and took one last look around the life she was leaving behind. Then she smiled, left her keys in the bowl and slipped out, shutting the door softly behind her.
