Wow! First day at university, athletic (Basketball) scholarship in hand and already selected as freshman team Captain. I was just seventeen having skipped one grade in middle school, so I was one of the youngest freshmen. This story is from my diary of Freshman year. English majors were required to keep a daily diary in English. I kept two, one for my Kyo Su (Korean for "Professor") to read and one for just me which I still have. When I entered college, I was very ignorant about "real" life. In middle school and some high school, I was always the leader whether in class or in sports (basketball). I was always friends with boys and competed with them whether we were shooting baskets or practicing Martial Arts and even wrestling matches. I got into fights with boys and sometimes won but suffered my share of black eyes or bloody noses. I was a real tomboy and dressed like one, wearing jean pants and tee shirts. He spotted me immediately as I had gone through many interviews with him and, since I stood almost five-feet-nine, was easy to find. He came up to me. I bowed slightly and he asked me to step far away from the other students. He addressed me very formally as teachers do, telling me I was responsible for the players' roommate assignments to maintain team integrity, and that I was to select a team manager. I explained that I had already selected my courses and, since I was a declared double major in English and Business Administration, I had not completed all the necessary steps for processing. He was upset and said he was against freshmen declaring their majors, that he had chosen me as Captain because of my ability as a player, and also because I had Captained my high school teams and won two championships. He went on to say that he had spoken to two of my high school coaches and learned I was an excellent student/player, but had a very big mouth and was at times disrespectful to them when defending my team. Continuing on he said that he was also informed that I am prone to violence when I feel my teammates or I have been wronged and that I had injured another team's player and her ...
