The wedding reception was in high gear, champagne flowing like water and people laughing and talking all around her, but Ariel still felt lonely. She was the matron-of-honor and had gotten her share of attention, but seeing the happy couple just reminded her that there was something missing in her own marriage. What that was she couldn't say. A certain sense of excitement maybe. And she wished she could change out of this silly dress. Why her sister had chosen to put all the bridesmaids into red dresses with white hose was beyond her. At least she didn't have to mingle with the guests. She slipped outside where it was cool but quiet. Someone had the same idea, it seemed. A man in a tuxedo was already leaning against the railing of the wide stone balcony overlooking the city below. He turned a warm smile on her as she approached. "Hi," he said. "Ariel, right? "Yeah, Ariel," she told him. "You didn't really have to guess did you? I mean, you are the best man and all." Nick laughed. "No, I didn't forget," he said. "Just thought it seemed polite. He was staring at her, and it gave her goose bumps. "What about you? Your husband inside having fun?" "I’m not married either," she said. “Really,” he said, drawing the word out. "Seems a shame that the best man and the maid-of-honor should be alone at the reception." His smile warmed her. "Well, we're not alone right now," she said. "We're together. But watch it. I’m not easy." He lay his hand over hers, then squeezed her hand gently when she didn't pull away. "I'd rather watch you," he said. "Look, I don't want to be out of line here, but you've been on my mind ever since I met you. That first time I saw you at the rehearsal dinner, I couldn't believe how pretty you are. Or that you'd be there alone." She turned her gaze on him, wanting it to be stern but knowing it wasn't. "I know," she said. "I saw how you stared at me. Why haven't you looked at me that way since?" He shrugged. "My brother was about to marry your sister,” he said. “It didn’t seem like…" "Like what?" she asked, breathless. He moved a little closer. “Like we’d be allowed to get together even if you wanted it. But there’s no one here but us right now, so I’m going to tell you what I wanted to say for two weeks now. It’s like…like I've been missing something all my life, and that something is you." She gazed up at him, her eyes boring into his. ...
