... knowing I couldn’t back down now, “I love you and I always will. But I can’t have sex with you.” Tara looked desperately at Kayla. “You’re okay with it, right?” she asked in a breaking voice, “You said you were fine with it.” “I am,” Kayla replied, putting a hand on Tara’s shoulder. “I’m not,” I replied, “And that’s my decision. You said you’d be okay with that.” Tara bit her lower lip and nodded slowly. “Okay, Jack,” she said in a hollow voice. “It has nothing to do with you,” I said quickly, barely biting back the addition of, “It’s me.” That was one cliché I hoped to avoid. “Tara,” Kayla said, leaning against her, “Go back to my room for a sec.” “Okay…” Tara said quietly, giving her a small smile before leaving. Kayla looked at me and said, “Jack, what’s wrong?” “What do you mean?” “Why are you saying no?” I threw up my hands. “I thought I was allowed to say no if I didn’t want to do it. If you didn’t want me to say no, you should have just told me it was going to happen.” “I wouldn’t do that to you. Neither of us would.” “I know…” My fingers ran through my hair, caressing the edge of a massive headache that was building inside my skull. “Kayla, it wouldn’t be like with you and me. I mean…I’m not in love with her so it would just be sex with a guy who loves her.” “That’s what she wants. You said you loved her as more than a cousin.” “Yeah, maybe I do, but it’s not the same. You and me…we’re made for each other. And you’re the one I’d be thinking about while…You know.” ...
... “Jack, you’re making this way more complicated than it needs to be,” she sighed, her arms folded under her breasts. It didn’t seem the least odd that we were having this conversation completely naked. “This is how I feel. Now tell me the truth…are you really okay with this?” “Of course!” she said, a little too quickly. I stepped closer and put my hands on her shoulders. “Kayla…” She bit her lip and hesitated. “I…I would be fine with it if that’s what you wanted.” “So you’re not 100%.” “That’s not the point. She wants it…she needs it.” “She doesn’t need it, sweetheart.” She looked at me like I’d grown another head. “Jack…she’s never been with a guy who cared about her even half as much as you do. Whatever hang-ups I have—not saying I have any—don’t matter. She loves you and you love her.” “And she’ll find a guy who will give her that better than I can.” My arguments basically wrote themselves but they only ran voice-deep. In my heart, I was still battling it out. “Please, Jack,” Kayla said, a tear running down her face, “This will help her. And it’ll help you, too.” “Me?” She put a hand on my cheek. “I know how much it’s still bothering you. What happened with Coach Walburn. I’m sorry, I’m not trying to use it against you, but…I know it hit you while we were having sex.” I didn’t say anything. “This could help you. I can’t even begin to imagine what you’re feeling right now, but couldn’t this help? Take your mind of it and everything?” “It’s going to stay on my mind, Kayla. It’s ...
