... wasn’t where I truly belonged. It even had a different smell and a different look to it. Though it was the same, it wasn’t. Or maybe, I wasn’t. All three of the girls were home and they literally attacked me from three different directions all at once; pelting me with kisses and engulfing me with hugs. Just for the record, this had NEVER happened before; one of us being greeted by all the others with such tremendous affection and adulation. I felt like a soldier returning from the front. I couldn’t understand it. But it was just what I needed at that moment. Then the conversation that followed is one that I’ll never forget. “There’s something different about you Mandy,” Laura said. “Oh my God,” Pam said. “You’re in love!” “Yeah,” I whispered. “Yes I am. Very much.” “Are you being loved back though,” Stephanie asked. “I think that’s fucking obvious Stef,” Pam shot back. “Just look at her. She’s got the glow.” “The glow?” Laura repeated. “What the fuck does that mean? You can have a glow just from eating a lot of chocolate. Or being pregnant. Oh shit! Mandy, you’re not pregnant are you?” “Laura, she’s in love with a woman. Something and someone wonderful have clearly come into your life. So hold on to it, and to her.” With tears streaming down my cheeks, I flung my arms around them all and pulled us all into a big group hug. “I love you guys so much,” I sobbed. The four of us ordered in Chinese takeout for dinner that evening and we all then sat around the kitchen table with our chopsticks and diet soda while I told them about my week; in very general terms mind you. I started from when Stephanie dropped me off at Auntie Lucy’s party and ended with Deanna and I saying goodbye just this afternoon and why we chose to spend this last night apart. Now leave it to my dear friend Laura to cut through the fat. “One of you will crack,” Laura said with a mouthful of egg roll. “What do you mean,” I asked. “I mean that around bedtime either you or Deanna won’t be able to stand it any longer and you’ll call or text the other. But just to see how you’re doing; nothing more! You know, you’ll give the standard comments like: Oh, I miss you or I love you or I can’t stop thinking about you. That kind of shit.” Laura expounded. “You know Laura, I think you missed your calling. You should’ve been a relationship or ...
