I figured Mom would call to check in with me eventually; she always does. After all, that’s what mother’s do. Then why is my heart pounding so hard and why is my stomach tying itself in knots? Why should I be the slightest bit apprehensive about telling her where I am and who I’m with? I mean, hooking Deanna and I up was her plan from the start. Wasn't it? Well, just because I suspect her of playing Cupid doesn’t mean she actually was. It could honestly be that she just wanted the two of us to become friends and for Deanna to act as merely a role model for me or like another aunt to me. Oh God! What if finding out that Deanna and I have become lovers causes Mom to despise Deanna and hence, destroys their relationship? As I was on the verge of panic in thinking of so many disastrous outcomes, another thought suddenly occurred to me out of nowhere. “What time is it,” I asked Deanna. “It’s about twenty after eight,” Deanna replied as she glanced at the alarm clock on her nightstand table. “And its Wednesday isn’t it?” “All day long.” “Oh shit,” I gasped. “I was supposed to be at the store at seven this morning. Today’s the one day a week I still work in the bakery.” “Bingo,” Deanna chimed. I tumbled out of bed and scurried over to my purse on my hands and knees. Yanking my phone out, I managed to accept the call just before it went to voicemail. “Hi Mom,” I answered. “I know. I’m late. I’m sorry.” “Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been? Fifteen minutes late without a call ...
... is almost standard procedure, but an hour and a half? I’m already in tears and am on the verge of vomiting,” Mom roared in a very shaky voice. “I’m sorry Mom; I actually completely forgot what day it was. I haven’t exactly been keeping track of time the last few days,” I told her. “As long as you’re okay is all that matters,” Mom said; her tone relaxing. “I’m fine,” I replied. “So are you going to come in? How soon do you think you can get here?” “Well to tell you the truth, I’m not at home right now; and at this time of the morning it would probably take me at least forty-five minutes to get home. Then I’d need to shower and change and with the...” I was explaining before Mom cut me off mid-sentence. “Wait! What do you mean you’re not at home right now? Where are you?” Mom demanded. The moment has arrived! So what do I tell her? And as much as I hate to admit it; for an instant, I actually debated lying. But then I looked over my shoulder and I saw Deanna sitting up in bed and stretching. She glanced in my direction and smiled sweetly at me as she mouthed inaudibly: I love you. Tell her the truth you chicken shit little ditz! I returned Deanna’s inaudible love call with my own before continuing on the phone with a new found confidence and courage. “Actually, I’m with Deanna,” I told Mom. “Oh,” Mom chirped, sounding very pleasantly surprised. “You two having breakfast together or something?” “No,” I replied. “Or at least not yet anyway. You see, we actually spent the entire ...
