... several weeks ago.” She then turned to him with delight in her eyes. “I had forgotten about it completely!” She was absolutely beaming! As Matt looked into those alert eyes he realized that while she was very much excited about her discovery, the immediacy and sincerity that those radiant blue lanterns conveyed, were like currents flowing from a stream on which they were both coursing their way. They suggested no abandonment, but rather a heightened presence of mind. She was navigating in a rich world of spirit, and not swooning under a cloud. Neither did he find her intoxicating but on the contrary, his own self was keenly engaged. He remembered how earlier in the day, back in the Emergency Room, he had found within himself a new capacity to bear the feelings of others without loosing his ground. What a day this was turning out to be. While it was only a matter of hours since he made that discovery, it seemed like an eternity had passed. And now once again he was at the portal of the timeless. Claire continued her story. “One day, not too long ago, as I was racing out the door, Martin saw me and asked me where I was ‘off to in such a hurry.’” The fullness of her gaze had sufficient breadth to allow room for Matt to go back there with her. It was one of a few books that he had recently given me. I said it was extraordinary and I was deeply moved at times, but that I found it a little difficult and it would be another week at least before I finished it.” “He said, ‘Don’t be discouraged. The fruit comes in time. Your patient effort is more important than immediate comprehension. Waiting is just as much of an activity as going. Just give time a chance.’” “I had to agree with him; as usual he was so right. But then he said, ‘You might consider 'The Brothers Karamazov', and then you’ll better understand what I mean’.” Claire was just radiant! Matt was now confused. “I don’t get it,” he said. “I went to the library today,” she said jubilantly, "to get that book; Dostoyevsky’s, 'The Brothers Karamazov.' The book wasn’t there, but you were! And now I understand what he meant, when he said that I was a few weeks early for my appointment with a doctor.” She just warmed herself with the thought of her ‘appointment ’ today with Matt. “That’s not the first time he’s done something like that. He combines things in such a way that all the ingredients are there, but it is up to you to put them together. It’s only in retrospect that I discover these things. I often ...
