... them went into their respective offices and did a little late night work. An hour later, they met in bed, watched a sitcom together, kissed each other good night and fell asl**p. The next day was a brilliant, bright day. It was warm without being hot and the humidity was relatively low. Haden spent a few hours in her office trying to get some conference calls taken care of, but the view from her window kept calling her to her pool. When she'd gotten the bare minimum of work done that she needed to, she pushed away from the desk, went upstairs and changed into her little pink bikini. Heading downstairs, she grabbed her book, her phone, her sunglasses and her iPod. Settling in on the lounger, she texted Penny. “Hey if you arent busy u should come to my pool.” About twenty minutes went by with no response, but by then Haden was deep into her book and her music. Rihanna was belting out “S.O.S.” while Haden read about the lusty CIA agent and the distraught lonely heiress. “Hey!” Haden looked up to see James, Penny's younger son, standing at the edge of the pool, look at her. She pulled out an ear bud. “Hi, James. Going to go for a swim?” He nodded, he eyes darting to her and away again with clockwork regularity. “Yeah. My mom is in the middle of some big cooking project. She wasn't sure entirely what the noise was, but it was subtle enough that she didn't really snap awake. Instead, it was a slow float back to awareness. She'd made it through two chapters of the awful book but it had finally put her to sl**p. The sound of James doing laps had stopped, but she was somehow aware that he was still in the pool. The book was lying across her stomach, her sunglasses were still on and her ear buds were still in, even though the playlist she'd had on had run out. She cracked one eye open. James was in the pool, one arm over the edge of the deep end holding himself steady. He was staring at Haden with a deep intensity. There was a hint of movement below the water line, out of her sight. Haden didn't say anything or move. She didn't even open her other eye. Instead, she just watched James for a few seconds. “James.” She said it flatly, without accusation or reproach in her voice. There was a loud splash as James suddenly began swimming and made a poor attempt to act casual. “Hey, Mrs. Thorne. What's up?” There was a shaking in his words. She opened her eyes, took off her shades and sat up. “James, please don't do that in my pool.” “Do what?” She cocked her head and raised an eyebrow at him. He was treading water so hard that he was ...
