Some dealers had their own technician, some were large discount dept stores in which we serviced for them, and some calls were when the other shops were overloaded (or an area of town where they did not want to go). The techs rotated this, so you only had it once a month, or so, and whatever day in the week you wanted off in exchange. After s short “trainee” time, I was out on my own. Our client base was anywhere between the “projects”, the richest suburbs, and rural areas of upstate NY. The owners were an older, very catholic couple. The company had some rules in an employee guide: “If there is teenage girl home alone, we were to reschedule the call. (Our telephone staff was supposed to explain this before the call was given to us.) If anyone, man or woman, answers the door naked, tell them to clothe or you will have to come back later (usually they did clothe). If you see or smell drugs in use or an obviously intoxicated person, get out of there, and call it in. If you’re little voice inside tells you to get out of there, post haste, and listen to it.” (We had one guy robbed at gunpoint.) We took the trucks home, as we got our calls by two way radio. The radios in the service truck made the job easier to do, and made us more efficient. The radios also allowed us to “call in” problems of any nature. We also had “map books” to find the customers homes. This was tradesman, 1968 B C. (Before computer).
