Monday morning Tess pulled her car to a halt between the two gate posts at the bottom of the dusty drive way. She reached for her hand bag and pulled out a silk scarf which she handed to Evelyn in the passenger seat. "It is such a nice day, we'll put the top down," she said as she pushed a button on the steering column. With a whirr and a clunk, the roof of the sports car folded back and disappeared into the trunk. Tess put on a peaked cap. It didn't match her professional looking work skirt and white blouse but no one would see her. "I've never been for a ride in a convertible," Evelyn said as she tied the scarf under chin. Tess carefully guided the car towards the highway, made sure there was no traffic and then turned right towards town. An hour later, Evelyn pointed out the bank building in the main street. Tess parked her car in front of the cafe next door to it . "We have time for a coffee if you'd like?" Tess asked her. "That sounds nice," said Evelyn. Tess stepped from the car tossed her cap into the back seat and then put on the blazer that matched her skirt. She picked up her bag and laptop computer. "Do you think I should put the roof back up? It's so hard to keep it nice while we are camping. It would be easier if it was shorter," Evelyn said, "We must trade mobile phone numbers. They will work now we are in town." While they had their coffee, they put each other's numbers into the memory of their phones. "I'll call you when I'm finished," said Tess as she rose and picked up her computer and bag. She left a ten dollar bill under the saucer of her cup. "For the coffee," she said "See you soon, Ev." Evelyn watched as Tess walked the few steps to the door of the bank. 'She has the most beautiful figure. Look at her in her suit,' thought Evelyn, 'That is the first time she has shortened my name. Thankfully she is becoming even more comfortable with me.' Evelyn took the money from the table and went in to pay at the counter. She then started making her way down the street looking into the shop windows as she went. She noted that a number of the smaller shops had closed down. But she knew that the large mall that had been built two streets over was thriving. It was sad to see. She was stopped a couple of times by some of the older people who remembered her. She chatted to them and filled them in on what herself and Henry were doing in retirement. They all remarked she had not changed a bit. Eventually she found a hairdressing salon and entered. The woman behind the counter was ...
