For you the snow is always falling, As it was on the day you died, You had passed through basic training, Even though about your age you had lied. The sun shone bright upon that morning, The air cold, calm and crisp, Out there in the trenches, A moment of quiet bliss. The guns had stopped for a little while, The bangs and bullets stopped still, But you all knew in your hearts, That still you would have to go over the hill. The frozen ground was daunting, A place nobody wanted to take rest, You had already all got trench foot, But this scenario wasn't the best. When the silence broke with their gunfire, Hell had broken loose, If only you had been there, On the day of the Christmas Truce. My love you were one of the unlucky ones, One of the heroes that fell on that day, I still remember, The things you used to say. You used to tell me you loved me, Loved the way my hair wobbled and curled, I wish I could have seen you again love, But that isn't the way the war unfurled. You had decided not to die a virgin, Though we were not yet married under God, We made love in the barnyard, On the stacks of hay, day and night. I remembered that moment when you took me, And I play most frequently, I remember those feelings you gave me, Especially the ones of ecstasy. I found out shortly after I lost you, That I was to bear our child, But an old flame from my youth, Ensured I was not left to the wild. He took me and married me quickly, And helped me and the young one to grow, And on the day that I bore her, The sky shimmered with snow. I knew that people thought me vulgar, For loving and bedding more than one man, Though I think you would be proud, That your child lives on in our clan. Every day that it snows, love, I remember you and the time that we shared, The shimmering sky of snowflakes, Each as unique as you. Our child knows her heritage, And will pass it on to her own, She will tell them her father's story, And dance with your ghost every time it snows.
