... road while we raced. John and I would walk the road before each race making sure it was safe for the next run. “Friday afternoon a storm blew into town,” “Some called it a tornado, others called it straight line winds,” My mother said. “Others thought it was the hands of Fate,” she added. My mother explained there was plenty of storm damage around town and in their neighborhood. John’s parents place was a mess after the storm. It had taken a direct hit from the storm. John and I were there working on his car when it hit. We cuddled in their basement thinking we were going to die. “I wish we would have,” my mother said wiping her tears. My Aunt reached over and took her hand as she went on with her story. John and I survived the storm, as did his parents. Together all of us went to work getting their shop back into shape. As we worked, I asked John about the races tonight. He told me surely the others would not be thinking of racing tonight and we went about cleaning up after the storm. A little before 9 pm we all heard and saw the police cars, the fire department and the ambulance racing by their shop. John and I looked at each other and dropped what we were doing. John told his parents we would be right back. I remember John’s mother Mary grabbing his arm as she said, “You drive safely you hear.” John told her he would and we climbed into his car. We saw two cars entangled as one with both burnt badly with smoke still coming from them. I saw two sheets covering something or some one at the same time John did. John started to run toward the car when Larry a police officer we both knew in our town grabbed us both. “You don’t want to see this,” Larry said to us. “Let go of me,” John replied as he broke Larry’s hold of him. Larry held onto me shaking his head no at me. I watched as John ran to the sheets upon the ground. He lifted one then the other and then just stood there shaking his head from side to side. Larry handed me off to a group of kids from our school as he went to John. I asked the other kids what happened. They explained that Steve and Ryan decided to go race. No one else wanted to go what with just having that storm. They told everyone fine as it would have come down to one of them racing John anyways. A small group came here with them and they lined their cars up to run. They raced and during it, something went wrong. I heard some say, “No one checked the road,” “It was wet and they both lose control of their cars,” “Their cars became entangled and they both took out a telephone phone pole.” “They were thrown from their cars ...
