... out of the boat, and-- And-- No fucking way. "Maria?!" the guy called out in genuine surprise. I gave a little wave as Nate Reynolds--the boy I had been completely infatuated with as a teenager--stepped into view and adjusted his slacks. "You know these two?" Shane whispered. Before I had a chance to answer, Nate and the redhead were heading straight for us. "My god, it really is you!" Nate laughed, clapping his hands excitedly. "Last time I saw you, you were still a little girl. You look fantastic." So did he. The last time I'd seen Nate, I'd just finished high school and he'd just finished college. He’d been cute at 23, but now he was downright gorgeous--with a classically dashing, Don Draper-type face and a killer smile. He let his eyes travel up and down my body like a hungry wolf. "You going to introduce us, honey?" the redhead asked, momentarily breaking the spell. Nate blushed, caught. "Oh of course, sorry. This is my wife, Kara. Kara, this is Maria--an old friend of my sister's. I actually used to babysit her, back when we were kids." "Looks to me like the little girl is all grown up," Kara teased. Shane and I both introduced ourselves, and I couldn't help but notice the obvious appraisal the other woman gave my husband when she took his hand. Shane swallowed hard, clearly enjoying the attention. Nate shook his head in disbelief. "Well, this is crazy! What are the odds of us bumping into each other like this after all these years?" "And under such awkward ...
... circumstances!" Kara added with a naughty smirk. We all laughed. "You two should have been here a few years ago," Shane said. "Ria convinced the ride operator to shut down that Tunnel of Love--with the two of us and another couple still inside it." Nate looked at me with a twinkle in his eye. "Another couple huh? Sounds like you guys know how to have a good time." "Were they friends of yours?" Kara asked. "Best friends," I answered. Shane nodded, "We share an apartment with them, not far from here. They just got engaged tonight." Kara turned to her husband and whispered something in his ear. Whatever it was, Nate happily nodded his approval, then turned his attention back to me: “Kara and I just moved here last week, and we don’t really know anyone in the area. We’d love to make some new friends--maybe the six of us can all get together sometime? Go out to a baseball game or something?" "Like… a triple date," Kara explained, her seductive smile betraying the true intentions of their offer. I glanced over at Shane, who was having tremendous difficulty tearing his eyes off of the gorgeous young redhead and her skimpy dress. "Actually," I said, wrapping my arms around Shane's body, "if you guys don't have any other plans tonight, why don't you both come home with us and meet Tracy and Connor? We can all get to know each other better.” “You’re sure you don’t mind?” Kara asked. Shane shook his head, “Of course not. The more the merrier. After all, it’s Christmas." THE END
