... stupid,” Karla started, but didn’t get very far. “No, YOU are stupid,” Claire insisted. She paused briefly, and softly smiled as she continued. “But I don’t want to give you an ego trip and let you think you are so special in that department either. We all have a blind spot and it is hinged on stupidity. That is just being human. We need to recognize that, and keep it in mind.” Karla was unimpressed. “Remember the Italian Omelet?” Claire asked smiling. She leaned back against the counter, folded her arms in front and of her and waited, allowing plenty of room for a response. Hmmmn. Claire wondered. How long is this going to take? Her trademark raised eyebrow made a well-defined arch over her left eye. Karla’s roller coaster had become stuck at a low point and she needed to get rolling again. Claire just stared. Karla’s chest started to heave. She couldn’t swallow what was in her mouth. The only way was out. With a burst, she sent coffee flying everywhere. All of the tension of the last week went with it. Refocusing the drift, she quickly brought it back on track again. “So it was his fault?” As Claire started to clean up the coffee spray all over the table with a dishcloth, she never broke eye contact. With her question she kept their focus on the bigger mess. Karla looked off to the side and said nothing while she considered that another avenue of escape had just been closed off. When Karla was face forward again, and Claire was certain she was ready; one step at a time she continued. “You want to say that you are not happy with the choices that you’ve made. But that is nonsense. The fact is, you didn’t choose. You skipped town. And as far as being unhappy goes, you are not happy, because you are not happy. In ten minutes, the phone rings, and then you are happy again. He y! You are not a yo-yo – or at least you shouldn’t be.” With regular pauses in her delivery, she allowed ample time for Karla to absorb what she had to say to her. “You want to tell me that you talked it over with yourself. Well, if that “self” was ...
