Screaming shrilly, she jumped back and turned to run, slipping on the damp grass and landing on her stomach to almost have the wind knocked out of her. Scrambling to her feet and momentarily disoriented from the fall and her fright, Kate ran towards the north field away from the barn and was stopped by a prickly hedge; the sharp thorns bringing her to her senses. Mastering her fear, she closed her eyes and calmed herself. When she opened them she saw Jim walking towards her with the heavy-duty aluminum police flashlight he bought for her; all fear melting away and realizing there must be a logical explanation for what happened.
