I had been having a bad couple of days. If I were a superstitious guy, I would have considered looking for a witch doctor to have a curse removed. It started early the first morning. I had arranged for an early morning pick-up to get to the airport. The limo didn't show, and calls to the company were going straight to voice mail. I woke my wife up and asked her to drive me. She grumbled because she hates the traffic around the airport, but we managed to get me there on time. If I were a betting man, I would place odds that the air crew had tried to use the same limo company. The flight was delayed by nearly an hour as we waited for a crew to arrive. The flight from Chicago to Denver was very peaceful until we touched down. Something mechanical failed in the brakes, causing one set of tires to lock up. In more than twenty years of fairly regular travel, I had never had to do an emergency evacuation. It was terrifying and exciting at the same time. They managed to get everyone out of the airplane with only a few minor injuries. Any chances of catching my connecting flight were washed away by the crews that kept the burning tires from destroying the rest of the plane. Several hours later, they brought us the items that we had left behind in the aircraft, and I was able to recover my laptop and camera. The cases smelled a bit of smoke, but thankfully, they were undamaged. I had to wait in another line to verify my checked luggage, and the finally I was able to stand in a line to ...

When I got to the ticket agent, she was happy to simply hand me my new tickets, and then move on to the next passenger. It was getting pretty late by the time I had made it to Spokane and collected my bags and a rental car. It was more than an hour drive out to the job site. I had to drive past the job site to get to the hotel. It wasn't quite quitting time, so I stopped in to say hello. I also checked out the equipment that I was supposed to be updating. With a little bit of automation magic, I was to upgrade the machine with parts and programming and increase its output by fifteen percent. I offered to stay late and do the work, but the manager wanted me to work with a specific guy on first shift, so I arranged to be in early the next morning. I grabbed cheap fast food and checked in to the hotel. I jumped online to let my wife know I was safely arrived. She wasn't online, so I just left a message. After that, I pretty much just ate, cleaned up, and went to bed. I slept soundly until around 3am when the fire alarm started shrieking. Any chances of being well rested went up in the smoke of the grease fire that burned in the restaurant portion of the hotel. Smoke had poured into the lobby, so all of the staff were standing in the parking lot with us guests. Eventually, a fire ...
