The divorce lawyer called me two days later.” They were not rich and she had to settle for getting child support payments from him. Then she told me about the lawyers and the media. “I hate the frigging media and the lawyers,” Ella said with a bitter tone in her voice. I could see her thinking about it and it was what soldiers called Post Traumatic Stress. She told of the kid next door who had just died and her daughter air-lifted to a specialty hospital and some blonde bimbo sticks a microphone in your face and asks you, “How do you feel.” Then a whole herd of lawyers, like the vultures who advertise on TV, came out of the woodwork promising gazillion dollar settlements. Fortunately she had an old country lawyer acquaintance who took her under her wing. This lawsuit was too big for his one-man shop, but he read all the offers and they turned them all down. He found a firm which specialized in this type work and did not want half of any settlement. By this time I could agree with her opinion of lawyers who lie through their teeth in court but are never sanctioned. I saw it at least once a month. Meanwhile she filed her lawsuit against the truck line after the driver’s conviction. The company offered about $500K to settle. She did not accept and it was supposed to go to court. A year later she was broke and had lost her house. She was lucky that Emma qualified for a lot of federal and state aid to include the apartment. By the time Emma was seven she started in a private school and Ella went back to work. Emma was sleeping without screaming anymore. Three month ago her country lawyer kicked the big law firm’s ass and told them to get with the program or the blonde bimbo reporters would be camping out on their steps with pictures of little girls in wheelchairs. Amazingly within two weeks she got a $4 Mil settlement. “So again, here were the damn reporters hounding me about ‘How does it feel to be a Millionaire?’ when I just want to scream at them asking who do you think got the better deal - the dead girl or Emma?” She inhaled deeply and finished her story by telling me how her country attorney helped her get a new driver’s license in her maiden name, changed all her bank accounts to new banks and hid her millions.
