... man of faith, and stood at the head of the church just under the directing Pastor, but he was also a man of swirling gossip and rumor. Many a lady turned their heads to the man of God that also ran one of the wealthiest agricultural corporations in Florida alone. He had money, though you couldn’t tell aside from the two story Antebellum home we live in out in the Golden Acres of central Florida. I try not to think of him now as we slowly ride along the back roads leading to Caden’s home. I’d much rather focus on the firm grip to my thigh, the gentle way he squeezes and runs his fingers in circular motions in order to try and calm me. I wish I could tell him how I really feel about him, and hope to God he doesn’t feel the fire he’s fueling by his touch. And just when my heart starts to calm, and just when he rounds the road that leads to the outside of his gate, the entire earth around us illuminates in bright white light and thunder booms against us so hard the car rocks. Unknowingly, Caden’s foot pushes down on the accelerator of the car— —and I suddenly let out an ear-splitting scream— —and something large and black and overbearingly loud crashes from the trees out of fear and runs across the road. Caden tries to swerve, and he almost misses the wild boar apart from its hind legs catching at the corner of the car. The car jerks and slides in the slimy muck of land and Caden slams down on his brakes. The squeal into the night as we slide, hit the sudden plunge of a ditch, ...
... and find us rolling in the night down into oblivion. Eyes closed, all one can hear is the sound of crunching metal and the low whine of a tree swaying in the wind from impact, the splintering of wood as the heavy trunk buckles and sends the tree crashing down on top of the car. Suddenly everything dies, except I feel more alive than ever. The seat belt has me pinned and the air bags are beginning to recede. Something burns on my face and over my arms and then pain splits from the bottom of my stomach and I hurl bile into the ceiling of the car. At my side Caden groans and I find his hand reaching out to find mine. The darkness only allows me to see his silhouette, but a throbbing pain in my head is beginning to render me blind. “I don’t want to die,” Caden whispers to me as thunder rolls over us. “I feel like we’re going to die.” “We’ll live,” I assure him. “We’ll be okay.” “How do you know,” he cries and I lose all vision. His voice rings like an echo in my ears and I can feel the earth starting to pull away. It’s now or never. “I don’t know,” I mutter and I hear him sigh. Then I say it, the four words I’ve been wanting to say since he held me the night HWMNBN’ed ruined me. “I love you, Caden.” As darkness caresses me and pulls in me and calls me his own I think I hear Caden laugh in relief… TWO WEEKS LATER - Caden Ray Smith - We suffered burns from the airbags, and bruising from the crash, but all in all somebody had their guardian eyes out for us. We were held by firm hands ...
