Fast forward to age 3… Ellie grew up with my English as her language, even using it first, before the Thai native language, which she was well conversant with also. But, come time to choose a School for her 3 years of Kindergarten, I re-asserted my role and it was me who went around to 6-7 Schools and chose the one I wanted Ellie to attend, allowing my wife a visit after I had made my choice; she had no complaints and as she was more interested in her office social life, and her social life after office hours, this Dad became the primary carer of and for his daughter. Ellie took to School like the proverbial `duck to water` and soon became fast friends with 3 other girls in her Class, and she loved the activities and grew less shy as she played with other children – the one hugely important need she had never had spending time only with her Grandmother most days. I bought a car before Ellie started School, so come the first big holidays, I was able to take Ellie out for day-trips – safely strapped in her child`s safety seat, and even, after heated battles, I loaded her up one morning and we had our first multiple-day vacation at a little seaside resort my wife and I had stayed at previously, and which Ellie now came to regard as her own principal holiday destination. So twice a year, she and I go there, but on the 3rd day – it takes 4-5 ...

... hours driving, plus stops, there, so I like then to have 2 minimum days to relax, before a long day`s drive home. Last year, now 4y.o. Ellie decided by the 3rd day, both holidays, she was missing her Grandmother – no, not her Mother: Grandmother – and wanted to go home; and we did. And now it is the mid-semester break in her Kindergarten 2 year, and we will go this week. 2 weeks ago was Grandmother`s Birthday; I was laid up with a sprained ankle, so didn`t have to make excuses to avoid joining the family and go out. But it was Ellie`s remark which changed my thoughts and my opinions about Mae: “I love Yai (grandmother) Daddy.” That simple remark told me I hadn`t been nice to Mae through straight-forward jealousy, and that it was probably confusing to Ellie, who knew of the strained relationship between her Daddy and her Grandmother. So, I changed; just like that. I had a Smartphone now and the pre-loaded apps let me send Mae some stickers for Happy Birthday, and a cake and roses; plus some text, but her English was very limited, and transliterating Thai into English text meant I only tried very simple messages. But, somewhat surprisingly, she quickly responded with some stickers of her own: friendly, nice ones. So I bit the bullet and texted her: `I know I haven`t been very nice; today, for your Birthday, I would like to start and be friends again, because Ellie loves you` - interspersing it with Thai words and stickers to ease her understanding.
