... taken the brunt of the impact, while cushioning her to allow survival. It was shattered and had strewn a long path of debris. Her space suit was intact as she carefully checked the seals and readouts. The small atmosphere was not safe for humans, not enough oxygen, too much of everything else. She ran through a brief curse-filled hunt for confirmation that her mayday had been picked up, but her suit didn't have the power needed. She mentally shrugged, she would be dead in a few days if help was not at hand and it was very unlikely to arrive in time, even if they had heard it. After hunting through the wreckage for salvage items, which were pathetically few, she looked around the small planetoid. It was light red soil with darker jagged rocks that showed no signs of life. She was in the daylight side, but it was weak sunlight as this rock was so far from its sun. She did not know how long the day would last. She decided to climb the nearest slope to see if she could spot anything useful for her survival. It was a hard, long climb that underscored how unfit she had become as her old ships maintenance problems had taken time away from her normal exercise routine. Her emergency pack weighed heavily on her shoulders, but she was not going to leave her only source of backup oxygen behind. As she crested the top of the hill she was shocked to hear a faint crackle and hiss of an audio transmission. Bridy checked the source on the sleeve of her suit and realized it was a low ...
... frequency signal that originated on the planetoid. Radio wave transmission was so old fashioned it was only included because it used so little power. She was able to estimate which direction the signal came from and then started walking. The faint fluctuations could not be understood yet, it was possibly only a beacon, but Bridy hoped it would even up her chances of survival. Bridy struggled across the barren landscape driven onward by the odd snatch of words in the fuzzy transmission. They were in Basic, but did not sound robotic. The few words so far were not repeats but didn't make sense at the moment. A flash of light on the horizon caught her eye as she crested another hill. The faint transmission buzzed in her ears. "Keep coming... walking... help... try..." The voice sounded warm and masculine. Bridy dared not hope it was her rescue, but it gave a tremendous boost to her anyway. She tried to get a response when she transmitted back, but she wasn't surprised her suit transmission was either not strong enough or it could be faulty. Bridy gazed at the faint flash that seemed regular and set off again with more determination. Soon daylight changed to darkness as the planetoid rotated and Bridy cautiously kept walking with her helmet light set on full beam, she couldn't afford to get a suit puncture or injure herself by falling or catching her suit on the landscape. She found a smooth place to rest as she needed to take a break. She could not afford to sleep as the oxygen she had ...
