Basir, a foreign exchange student from Dubai, had become friends with Zoe over their shared love for comic books, D&D, and everything nerdy. Awkwardly shifting himself around, he turns to smile back at Zoe.

“I thought that might be the case,” says Professor Jennings. “Tommy, you are up next. Who would you like to team up with?”

Pausing for a moment, Tommy looks around the room, examining his options, before making his decision:

“Olga,” he replies, looking across the room to the tall blonde, who is also his music partner.

“I did not know you wanted me to blow on your flute” Olga whispers back to him with a smile.

Unnoticed by Tommy, Holly does little to hide her disappointment at having been overlooked by him in favour of Olga.

“Okay, my count there are four people left, two guys and two girls,” says Professor Jennings. “And Holly, the next choice is yours. Who would you like to pair with?”

Holly had been hoping to be paired up with Tommy, but now has only two options left: Cody or Walter. She has been friends with Cody for a long time, and is also one of the few people who knows that he and Una are currently dating.

Is it better, she wonders, to team up with Cody, to make him feel more comfortable with a friend he can trust? Or should she stay clear of him, for fear that it could not only ruin their friendship, but also his relationship with Una?

She makes her choice…

“I’d like to pair ...
    ... up with Cody, please.”

Cody looks over to her with a feeling of sympathy. Having known her for over a decade, he knows how disappointed she would be to not be chosen by Tommy, and feels like they can share in their mutual disappointment at not being teamed up with the people they wanted.

Una, however, does not see it the same way. She views Holly’s choice as an attempt to steal Cody away from her. And Cody’s apparent relief at being chosen by her does nothing to alleviate those fears. She tries to hide her tears as Professor Jennings continues to talk.

“Very good,” he says, “which means last but certainly not least, Walter you…”

“I’ll take Patricia, exactly who I wanted” Walter interrupts, before Professor Jennings can finish his sentence.

Walter looks across arrogantly to Patricia, a person whom he once considered a friend, before they drifted apart. He is keen to teach the bitch a lesson, while Patricia just stares at the ground, disbelieving her bad luck that she has to be paired with him, of all people.

Noting down his final pairing, Professor Jennings continues the class by explaining some of the finer details he will be looking for in their final essays, before the sound of a bell signifies the end of the class.

As his students leave, Professor Jennings takes note of their reactions, and how happy - or not - they seem to be with their assigned partners.

He is deeply looking forward to reading about their sexual exploits…
