I must've gone pale. Alice stared at me for a second and burst into a roaring belly laugh, nearly doubling over.

"I mean, obviously not LITERALLY," she said and resumed pacing around. "The point is that you needed a role player. It made you feel good and I was there for it. You even washed my sheets for me so I wouldn't get all sticky after. You were considerate and constantly attentive to my comfort level."

"Oh!" I cleared my throat and nodded, remembering the job search. "Right, right. That's great, Allie. You did it."

"Thanks to you," she said, grinning meekly. "I couldn't have done it without you. My anxiety would've gotten in the way if I tried filling those out by myself. I was so nervous and you made me feel so safe."

"Ah, well. You would've figured it out anyway."

Her grin widened. She hopped off her chair and leapt over to me, jumping into my arms, hugging me tightly. I held her to my chest and she wrapped herself around me like a purring kitten.
