I guided the raft into a small thicket and the raft floated to a gentle stop near the shore. Dave hopped out of the front and a cascade of water from his mesh shorts and shoes deluged the pale, baked rocks. We were both soaked, waist down, from the last rapid we went over. "I'll tie it up if you want to put our stuff in the cabin", I said to Dave. "Sure thing, Scott" he replied. The relief of being paired by the ranger station with such easy going guy made me smile as Dave started to drag the cooler up the path. I jumped out of the raft and into clear water that rose to my thighs. I savored the primal feeling of being washed over by this brisk sierran river while the sunset sent red lashes across the sky and pine hills. I soaked it all in; my cold wet legs, my arms throbbing from a long day of rowing, the sound of birds and breeze in the distance. I took deep breaths of the clean mountain air, feeling my chest strain against my Ranger shirt, before heading up to join Dave in the cabin.

I opened the wooden cabin door and laughed "That was quick!", as Dave had already laying shirtless with a beer can on the couch.

"Haha, I earned this!" Dave replied.

"Well I guess I deserve one too" I said, as I finished changing into some dryer clothes.

Even though this was our first assignment together, patrolling the middle fork of the American River, Dave and I already had a relaxed camaraderie. He was a little younger than me and had a prankster attitude. It was a great ...
... balance for navigating the river, little things like a knotted rope or losing a paddle would enrage my temper, Dave would laugh and calmly fix them. He had short dusty blond hair. I think he said he was a boy scout growing up.

The ranger cabin was a sturdy and old thing, probably built in the 60s or 70s and hardly touched since. It had a fireplace, dinner table, couch, and some bunk beds all in one big wooden room. Spartan, but this is what I loved and became a Ranger for. I would sleep in it every night if I could, something about the pure silence of nature soothed my brain in a unique way I couldn't get in the city.

"So what's for dinner bud?" I asked.

"What am I your wife?" Dave laughed. He seemed intent on not moving for a few hours while he finished his beer on the couch.

"I think we have chicken stew, rolls, hershey bars, and oh yeah, some more bourbon".

"Yum yum yum" I muttered, starting to build a fire. We could only bring a few packs of firewood in our raft, covered in plastic wrap so they stayed dry. The firewood plus the cooler and our bags was all we could really fit. We didn't really need to shower out here, the river washed our bodies and clothes well enough, and there was hardly anyone to impress out here, save for a few random white water rafting tourists. Looking scrappy and smelling a little, well, rugged, seemed a decent tradeoff to lugging a bunch of extra junk around.

After the fire had started to catch, I plopped down on the couch facing the ...
