He reached to start typing, and I moved the screen away. "My hearing's not that bad, and I've had my fun for the day. How young?"

"There are three of them, 18, 19, and 20. Only one of the babies is mine." He also explained the job situation.

"I hate rule-breakers, but I have to do what's best for the community. Confess what you did, marry them, and start a family. Being a purple is embarrassing, but it won't kill you. I'm sure your grandfather will be willing to serve as Mayor another year and make you his Deputy. If you do a good job in spite of it, the people will vote for you again."

Only my husband Abolou was close to me in intellect, and over half the colony are smart enough to be scientists or doctors back on Earth.

I knew that after the colony area was explored well in the first half year, Geology would only occupy Molly a few hours a week. I offered her a position as my executive assistant. She accepted, and also volunteered as my bedroom and shower assistant. She was my favorite pet, and the love of my life. My biggest regret is that I never kissed her or told her that.

People keep congratulating and honoring me for the hundreds of discoveries I’ve made and the thousands of patients my medical knowledge and skills have helped or saved. I still dwell on seven patients. I know that even an unusually good doctor typically loses a few people every year, but I'm far better than good. In eighty years as a physician, I lost seven. In my opinion, that’s at least six too many. I still remember all the faces of the families as I told them I failed and their loved one was gone.

    It’s been over five ...
