Make no mistake about it. In Greenwich, CT, a town known for its wealth, excellent schools, and over-indulged kids, prom weekend was the ultimate confluence of all of these themes, especially in the tony private school where all of the most privileged kids attended. It was the absolute definition of excess, with all of the kids trying to outdo each other, where the superlatives flowed freely: the prettiest dress, the biggest limo, the nicest flowers, and the most beautiful date. Dana’s brother Adam, who was one year younger, had been to his junior prom two weeks earlier, and she wanted to get his opinion on how she looked. His date was beautiful as well, and having seen all of the girls dressed in their finery two weeks ago, Adam could fill Dana in on the latest trends, and all of the best looks that the other girls were wearing. Kids in the school began preparing for prom just after Thanksgiving, as was the tradition, even though prom weekend didn’t fall until the weekend after Memorial Day. Dana and her friends, all part of the group known for being the most beautiful girls in school all got together to talk about which boy they hoped with ask them. They were all so excited. Sure enough, a few short months later, not long after New Year’s, the boys all started asking the most popular girls to prom. They had to act fast. The most beautiful girls would have a lot of suitors to choose from, and it was really a contest between the boys, to see who could snag the girl who was their “first choice.” Was it immature? Sure it was. But it was a game among the wealthy kids in the school. As was expected, and just on time, Matthew chose Dana as his prom date. She was smitten. She often spent hours at night picturing him in his football uniform. She also spent a lot of time picturing him out of his uniform, and she was certain he felt the same about her.
