... behind when Ayana and I were picked up by Guido and his cronies. On my way down the elevator, I called a cab. * * * I had a taxi take me to my storehouse, where I undressed, changed into clothing of a homeless person, and applied a ragged full beard. My Glock fit nicely into the holster on my belt in the back, I donned a dirty camouflaged jacket and called another cab. I got off at the intersection of 90th street and Jeffry Avenue, and walked south to the Beverly Heights community. This part of the city was under the control of the Gangster Disciples, who were a small white gang involved in extortion and petty theft. It was early afternoon with not many people on the snowy streets. At empty furniture next to a small convenience store, he leaned in the sheltered doorway and observed the limited business. A skinny kid came out of the store, crossed the street walking in front of me. “Sonny, can you spare a cig?” I mumbled. The kid stopped, looked him over carefully, and asked, "Why don’t you buy your own?” “Down on my luck looking for a smoke and a job.” “What can you do besides looking like a bum?” “I can do almost anything legal of illegal?” “Illegal you say. What kind of work is that?” “I’ve got experience robbing houses, convenience stores, dumb tourists, picking locks, most anything to steal money I have the ability for.” “Did you say picking locks?” “Ya, I’m good at that, how about that cig.” He handed me a cigarette, and said, “Follow me, and I’ll lead you to a guy who ...

I trailed behind him allowing the cigarette to burn rather than smoke it. I followed for about a half a mile, when the kid stopped and went into a locksmith shop. I followed him. “Tommy, this guy says he can pick locks.” “Thanks, Jimmy, I’ll check him out. What’s your name?" He looked at my slovenly dress and shaggy beard. “Jones, Dale Jones.” “Okay, Dale follow me into the back room.” The room overflowed with locks and a wide range of tools. "I want to see what you can do. Open the door to the storeroom.” He pointed at the door at the back of the room. I went to the door and opened it. I laughed. ”Tommy that’s a great joke. Would you like to lock the door so I can open it?” That door's always locked. “Okay, wise guy open it now?” I picked up two small pieces of metal, went to the lock and opened it in ten seconds. "What’s the next test?” “Here’s a lock none of us have been able to open. Let’s see what you can do?” I picked it up and pulled on the shackle, and the lock opened. I laughed, “Tommy how many jokes are you going to play on me, the shackle was closed but not locked. “Hells bells, lock the damn thing and open,” Tommy yelled. Using the same to instruments, I opened it in less than a minute. Tommy came up with about twenty locks, ...
