Rudy’s was one of the neighborhood campus bars, one popular with the Greek crowd. Sprinkled with sawdust on the floors, the bar attracted a steady clientele in the late afternoons and evenings but usually was scarcely populated at lunchtime despite the fact that they offered a great, reasonably priced burger. Carol lead me to the booth furthest from the front door., so there was nobody near us. We decamped there, ordered burgers and beers, made some small talk, got our beers and then discussed the council’s band suggestions. Some were great bands we simply could not afford. Others were somewhat interesting, but none really excited me. I told Carol that. I’ll “run these ideas up the flagpole at the next Board meeting and get back to you,” I promised, “but I suspect most, if not all, of these are longshots.” That cleared the deck for Carol’s other “ thing” that was more of “a personal favor” as she had described it. I had been intrigued by her characterization of the matter, but really had no clue what it was all about. My guess was that she wanted to get some more intelligence on why Brian really had broken up with her. And I was prepared to tell her that “sometimes the obvious answer is also the real one,” and that Janet was what had precipitated it as far as I knew. But it had also occurred to me that Carol needed a date for the Fall Ball thing, and maybe there was an outside possibility that she wanted me to take her to the dance. I had real reservations about doing that. ...

Our burgers arrived, and we dove into them and made small talk about the college men’s basketball team that was contending for the conference championship, the courses we were taking and various rumors floating about the Greek community. After the waiter had cleared our plates and brought us another round of beers, Carol got down to the real reason she had asked for our meeting. Unlike most other women I know, Carol is very direct. My conversations with many woman are fraught with circumlocution and ambiguity and say-one-thing-but–mean- another stuff. Carol, in contrast, is pretty upfront about things—at least in her dealings with men. Now maybe she is different in her relationships with women, which I believe tend to be haunted by hidden agendas. But with guys, she is pretty straightforward in my experience and usually says what she means and means what she says. Brian has confirmed that also. So I didn’t expect a long, convoluted windup before her pitch, just a fastball thrown quickly right done the middle of the plate. And that’s exactly what I got. Carol began: “I assume Brian’s told you that he and I have broken up. He’s apparently found someone else to warm his bed,” she snickered. “ We had a good time together, but it’s over,” she went on” I’m disappointed but not heartbroken about that. It’s time to move on, and I’ve accepted that. But it does leave me with a big problem. I have no date for the Fall Ball dance that’s coming up soon. I know you’re not in a frat or part ...
