... get a freaking room? It’s not that far away,” Rye says, laughing. I look over to find him sitting in the boat, his knees up to his chest, his hands entangled by his ankles. “You two, I swear… I need a boyfriend.” “You’re straight,” Caden says, holding my hand as we walk closer to the shoreline. “Don’t quote me on that, okay?” Rye pushes himself to his feet and throws his hand out before him. “It was nice to meet you, Nyx. I’ve only heard the best.” “Thanks,” I say to him, then bow. “You too.” “Attention, sir,” Rye commands then clears his throat. Caden sighs. “I swear to Christ,” he hisses, “if anything happens to my Dad’s truck I will kill you.” “It’s in good hands, babe,” Rye says back then jogs to the truck. “Babe,” I ask Caden quietly. Again, he sighs. Kisses my lips, Lifts me into the air so my legs wrap around his waist. “Rye is my cousin.” We both laugh. LATER THAT NIGHT “It’s time to face your fear,” he says to me, his voice sounding strong and confident. “You and I, Nicolas. We’ll face them together.” He stands at my side, places his hand on the window. “You don’t mean,” I say as I look out the window. The perfect afternoon turned into violet skies with coal-covered clouds reaching down into the treetops. Electric streaks sizzles through the air, and the hair on the nape of my neck stands erect. I jump as the thunder crashes into the cabin. And all it takes to make me stop is Caden’s hand on my lower back, his body melting into mine as one silhouette. He takes my hand, presses it to his fingers. Then he pulls me with him as he walks, silent footsteps along the floor. He reaches the front door, guides my hand to the knob and slowly we turn, my heart painstakingly going crazy as the door creaks open. Thunder BOOMS! “FUCK!” I yell and slam the door, go crashing to the floor. Caden eases me back to my feet, holds me flat against his body. “You’re okay,” he promises in my ear. “Easy does it, baby. I’ve got you.” Baby… I’ve got you… He has me all right. I take a deep breath, close my eyes, and this time he gives me clearance to stand by as he opens the door. The wind whips fast, whistles through the trees and the screens on the old windows. I stop in my tracks, walk as Caden pushes me forward. Seconds later I’m standing in soaked grass, rain falling hard against my skin like bullets. I swear to God I hear them crash and shatter like glass. It isn’t long before I’m drenched, isn’t long before I’m on my knees crying into Caden’s groin as I attempt to hide from the storm. He falls down with me and caresses me against his body. I feel his arms with warmth like the sun, his lips against the ...
