************************************************************************************* Craig Wallace was not wealthy. He had a decent job as a website programmer; but raising his daughter Carrie as a single dad had limited his ability to take on extra projects, work overtime, etc., which a lot of the people in his field did to enhance their incomes. Carrie never asked for much. She didn’t feel deprived, or complain about not having the latest phone or outfit or shoes, but Craig sometimes still felt guilty that he wasn’t able to give her nice things or go on a fun vacation. They lived frugally and in simple comfort, but Craig had gradually tucked a few extra bucks away and thought of an opportunity to spoil his little girl. His little girl who had recently become his lover. He set about to make it happen. The girls’ soccer team had been invited to an end-of-season tournament near Cleveland, about 300 miles away. Unfortunately, Anna’s oldest brother had a college visit scheduled for that same weekend and Anna figured she’d be missing out on soccer and be walking around some dumb, boring campus. Craig spoke to Anna’s mom Katie and offered to chaperone for Anna on the trip. He assured her that he could get adjoining rooms for them to stay in at the Hampton that was right near the venue, and that he would get a discount through one of the credit cards he used. Anna’s mom had planned on the whole family doing the campus tour, their first child going off to college and all, but she came to see how miserable Anna would be to not be with her team, so she had given in and told Craig OK, and that she’d give him $200 to cover Anna’s expenses for the weekend and that Craig should keep whatever is left to help pay for gas and the hotel. *** *** *** They’d be leaving next Friday right after Craig got off work. The soccer tournament had games all day Saturday and Sunday morning, with a Championship game Sunday afternoon if the girls won their group stage. A trip away from home requires some prep shopping, so the Saturday before Craig was pulling into the Crossroads Mall with Carrie and Anna in the back of the Prius. “Ok, ladies” Craig sounded very fatherly with his instructions. “I’ll drop you at the food court and meet you back here at 5, got it? If you are done early and you want to get picked up, just give me a call.” “And cut a shopping trip short?” Anna laughed back . . . “I don’t THINK so!” “Make sure you each get a nice outfit for when we’re out of town next weekend.
