... the undertakers too. I quickly nip across the road to my mum's solicitors. Maria see's me standing by the side of my car, and raises her eyebrows. "What are you doing here Peter?" There is just the hint of a smile on her worried face, which eases my anxiety a little. I try to act cool, but I'm frightened of what happened yesterday, and I hide my shaking hands in my pockets. "I thought I'd take you to lunch if that's ok with you?" I return her half-smile with one of my own. "I want to thank you for clearing mums room, I know it was you." I can see she is about to interrupt me, but I step in before she could speak. "Before we go to lunch, I've got something else to say. I've been busy this morning," I'm waffling, I can tell. "I went to mums solicitors and the bank and um, well, boring stuff really." I feel like a school boy asking for a first date. "I also went to the realtors on the way here and I've paid a year's rent on mums old place," It wasn't like me to be this tongue-tied, I'd taught hundreds of students, but somehow this was far more difficult. "I'd like you to carry on living there, it's your home after all. It might help you make a fresh start." Her eyes light up. "Are you serious? You'd do that for me?" She paused for a second, and I could see a small concern appear in her eyes. "What about the locals? You know what they'll say don't you, when they find out we are both living in the same house." "Yes, I've thought about that, but its no big deal. You'll have your ...
... own room, obviously. That goes without saying. And I'll have mums bedroom when I come to stay." I wanted to be confident, but somehow it wasn't working, I took a deep breath. "We could do the place up if you like? Look, I don't fucking care what people say to be honest, nobody knows the truth about us. It'll stay our secret, I promise." I searched for reassurance in her dark eyes, but there didn't seem to be any. "Look Maria two days ago we didn't have any family, now we have each other. I know mum would have approved, what do you think?" "No Peter that won't work, I don't want that." My heart dropped into my stomach, I couldn't believe it. I hadn't expected her to cover me in kisses, but I wasn't expecting a flat-out refusal. "How often will I see you? Once a year, maybe less. That's not for me, I want more than that," She reaches out a hand and gently brushes the hairs on my arm, sending goose-bumps over my body. "And what about the other thing?" "What do you mean?" I reply, covering her hand with mine and stroking her fingers. "You know what I mean Peter, don't play the innocent." "Well, I've already said, we'll have separate bedrooms. If you want someone to stay over, like a boyfriend or something I can sleep at a hotel. Look, I know it'll take some getting used to, but I'll be a good boy, I promise." It was a stupid attempt at a joke, or maybe I was just trying to shield myself from another rejection. Does she have a boyfriend? Of course she has one. She's too beautiful to ...
