... "That would be great. Can we continue our lessons?" He laughed. He made his voice deep, like the mystical genie. "Your wish is my command." We hung up. You know what was the best thing that ever happened to me? Getting fired from A & M. I stopped at Cold Stone Creamery on the way home from work. I was going to get a small cup for myself, but I decided on getting a whole gallon to give to Heather. I had to resist digging into it on the ride home with the plastic spoons they packed in the bag. Was that nerves and shyness about going to tell Heather about Jean-Luc? Maybe. I never realized how much I ate sweets when I was emotional. Which I guess was all the time now. Of course the emotion was changing from shy to wanting. But that's a good thing, right? I arrived at Heather and Evan's and Evan opened the door. He was wearing green cargo shorts and a t-shirt. He had a computer bag over his shoulder. "Hello, beautiful," he said, and gave me a brief kiss on the lips. "Oh, that's good," I said, without really thinking about it. "I've created a monster." "But it's a good monster, right?" He smiled. "Yeah, right." "I'm going to go work in the cafe and leave you girls alone. I'll see you in an hour or two." "Okay." Heather came in from the back porch. "I didn't make dinner. I ordered pizza from Dominos. I didn't know what you liked, so I just got double cheese." "Cheese is fine. I brought ice ...
... cream." "Good, I didn't make dessert. Want to sit out on the porch? It's hot, but I've got the fan going." "Sure." She got me a glass of ice water, and we sat on the porch. "I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that you're so okay with Evan going to Melody's," I said. "Oh. Is this okay to talk about this?" "Sure," she said. "Listen, over half of American marriages end in divorce. And I think the main reason is because people cheat. Then they feel bad about it. I love Evan. I don't want to deny him something he likes. I love him completely. I accept him. I don't want him creeping around behind my back, skulking around on the streets, feeling guilty, and maybe in danger." "I guess I can understand that," I said. "So you know how Melody's got its name, right?" she asked me. "No," I said. "I have no idea." "Okay," Heather said. "Like a gazillion years ago, like in the late sixties I guess, apparently Ms. J. was a bit of a wild c***d." I raised my eyebrows. "I mean, it was the sixties," Heather said. "So, she was this major babe." I raised my eyebrows again. "I know, I know. I'm just telling you. So picture it. She's twenty years old. She's hot. It's the era of free love." "Go on," I said. "So she has a twin s****r, who is even more of a loose cannon. They go to all the bars. Smoke pot. Kiss strangers. Wear go-go boots. Dance on tables. ...
