Tara finally let go of me and turned to Kayla. “Hey girl!” she said loudly, throwing her arms around her. The two girls hugged so tightly it looked almost painful. Kayla was squealing with joy. “It’s so nice to finally meet you!” she exclaimed, “You have no idea how hard it was waiting.” “You think you had it bad?” Tara asked, laughing and still not letting go of Kayla, “Try waiting a whole five days and a two-hour flight before I got to see my favorite cousin and his lady-love!” “Hey Jack!” my dad called from the car, “You wanna come help me lug in Tara’s stuff?” Oh, boy. See, Tara, much as I love her, has this thing about wanting as many choices in clothing as possible wherever she goes. So…well, let’s just say I was expecting us to have to carry in about five separate suitcases, each one the size of a Volkswagen. Imagine my surprise to see she had only packed two suitcases! Damn…either she cut back or the others were so big, she had to have them shipped to us. “What did you need my help for?” I asked, “You’ve got two hands.” “And you’ve got a smart mouth, which is why you’re giving me a hand,” dad replied, tugging one of the suitcases out. I sighed and grabbed the other one. “I didn’t have a smart mouth until just now.” “But I knew you were going to have one so I just—” I picked up the suitcase and walked on. It was like the squeaky sound an old tape-deck makes when you rewind. Hell, they were talking over each other so much, I was surprised there was any conversation going on at all. Tara laughed at something Kayla said (and I use the word ‘said’ in a very generous fashion) and turned to me. “Need some help?” she asked, eyeing the suitcase in my hand. “Oh, please,” I said, grinning as I curled the suitcase, “I lift heavier than this on laundry day. Only two suitcases?” She laughed, her head falling back as it always did when she laughed. “Yeah, I’ve been working on that. Stand back when you open it, though. It might explode.” Dad sidled past us into the house and called, “Alan! Amanda! Get your butts down here and greet your cousin!” “Good thing they weren’t here to hear you call Jack your favorite cousin,” Kayla commented to Tara. Tara rolled her eyes and blew a raspberry. “They know I love them.” She wrapped and arm around my neck and pulled me into a headlock, knocking my head with her knuckle. “But they won’t let me do this to them.” Thrashing and struggling, as I had found in the past, wouldn’t do any good. “They also don’t know your weak spot,” I grunted, digging my finger into the small of her back. She squeaked and let go, massaging her lower back. “Jack!” Kayla admonished, “Be careful.” “No, it’s okay,” Tara said, grinning, “Press that spot ...
