Cross-Country Taboo Pt. 1: Starting Out.

It's been five years now since I've moved out to the Soutnwest, in the greater Phoenix area since I graduated from high school in NE. Massachusetts. It all started when I got accepted into ASU, in Tempe. Originally, it was only supposed to only be for college. But then after I graduated in 1988, a huge job offer came along. Therefore, it would soon become a long-term career. Then in 1989, I found out that my mom also got a job offer to teach at a high school, not far from where I live. Back home where my mom was teaching at for about ten years, they were laying off teachers left & right. To make matters worse, my dad died in a tragic car accident with my younger sister Brenda a couple of years earlier. So things haven't been easy for us. Originally, my mom is from the Phoenix area, so it was time for her to come back home since most of my relatives on her side of the family live here. So my mom was able to put our old house up for sale and within a few months before moving, she was able to sell the house for more than what her and dad originally paid for. It was May of 1989 and I happened to get a mandatory 3 months off as part of my job contract. So I was able to get a one-way plane ticket so I could fly back to Boston so I could help my mom out. I knew it wasn't gonna be easy, and in more ways than one. First of all, it was hard enough to say good bye when I first left to go off to college almost five years earlier. ... back for a long time. Second, we had to decide what to do with all of our stuff. We would have to get at least a couple of moving trucks to get all of our immediate stuff down to Arizona. As far as the cars, older furniture, appliances and any other electronic stuff we've had, most of it would be donated. My aunt in Tempe was able to get a fully furnished condo for my mom when she sold the house. So any money she had left over would go into mutual investments, after she got a new car when we arrived. So after a couple months of taking care the estate(such as closing the home, etc.), we were ready to roll. But we had a going away party first for everybody. My uncle Richard came up to drive one of the moving trucks down with us, since I wasn't able to drive the truck because of my disability. Now given the fact that it would be an estimated 2600 mile one-way roadtrip, we figured it would take anywhere between four to five days- depending on the traffic, construction, etc. So we figured we'd go about maybe between 600-700 miles a day & stop off at a roadside motel every night we were on the road. After we finally got everything squared away as far as the house, triptik, and what all, we were ready to roll. In addition, my 21 year-old cousin Sara also came up with her father(my uncle) to drive down with us. And so on a bright & early Friday morning, we've ventured off.
