Shaking his head in disbelief, Kurt locked his desktop, grabbed his coffee mug and headed towards the coffee machine. As if on auto-pilot, he flashed his badge against the badge reader near the door, walked down the aisle. He stopped in front of the coffee machine and grabbed himself an espresso. The last few months were flashing by him. He was the newest member on the team and was handling the entire workforce management system by himself. He had put in extra efforts to get acquainted to his new tasks quickly and within three weeks, was well adept with the architecture of the entire application. The appraisal cycle had just concluded and looking back on his previous four months at the project, Kurt was pretty confident that his contributions were stellar and was expecting a good appraisal, until he was called in by Nelly, his immediate supervisor and Adriana, Nelly’s supervisor for a discussion. After a long, protracted discussion, he was let known that he will be given a performance rating of a measly 3.1 on 5.0. Your work has ensured that a lot of potential escalations were nipped in the bud, but I just couldn't do anything about your appraisal. Adriana was adamant about the numbers. She always thinks that the senior employees contribute the most and wasn't willing to budge a little bit.” Kurt was still not happy, but Nelly was truly the only person whom he could rely on. She was a great team leader, in her early 30s, full of energy and had personally ensured that Kurt received all the support he needed when he had joined the project. Realizing that there was little he could do, he went back to his desk and buried himself in his mailbox. It was well past 7 pm and most of the cubicles in his work area were empty. Kurt was heading for the Men’s room to freshen up a bit. The office was laid out such that the far left corner had a single door which opened up to an empty space, leading to two more doors at the opposite ends. The one on the left was the Men’s room and the one to right was the Women’s room. As he was heading towards the door to the left, Nelly had just stepped out. “Could you cheer up at least one bit? I hate to see one of my best performers walking around ...
