... into the backyard. “Guys? I have to go. I'll leave this back door unlocked. Can you lock it when you leave?” “Sure Mrs. Thorne!” Piped up the Jared, the dark haired boy. They both watched her leave. She hopped into her BMW and headed back down to the shop where she'd overheard the conversation between Mandy and Seirra the day before. The shop was quiet this early. Only one other person was there, a man in his thirties with a rockabilly haircut who was looking through the men's section, which was rather small. Haden walked up to the woman at the counter, who looked to be about Haden's age. She had long wavy black tresses, Bettie Page style bangs, and heavy but precisely applied makeup. She had a leopard print pencil skirt that went just past her knees and was wearing fire engine red platform shoes over fishnet stockings. Over her generous cleavage was a black corset and a french cut pink cashmere sweater. She looked like she'd stepped out of a 50s pinup catalog. “Hi. I'm hoping you can help me.” Haden stepped up to the register. The woman was intimidating, despite the smile she had on her perfectly made up lips. “I'll do my best, sugar.” She leaned forward on the counter on her elbows. “What are you looking for?” Haden shrugged. “That's the thing. It's a lot of upkeep, but it's worth it,” the girl did a quick pose and curtsey behind the counter. “But yeah, I'm sure we can find you some things that are a little more daring and fun. And trust me, I understand about dealing with the heat here.” She pointed to her face. “The humidity is my worst enemy.” To Haden's surprise, the girl didn't try to foist anything on her that was ridiculous. She seemed to grasp Haden's style and mindset immediately. They spent almost two hours trying on various tops, skirts and shoes. Haden even picked out a few pairs of stockings, some underwear and some false eyelashes. Although she wasn't sure where or when she'd wear them. By the time she got to the register, she had almost eight hundred dollars worth of clothes. Which, considering she'd spent three hundred on shoes just a week back, didn't really phase her at all. While the girl, who Haden learned was named Jules, began to ring her up, Haden looked around at the fliers at the register. There were all kinds of bands and events taking place at dozens of venues she'd never heard of. It was almost overwhelming. But she also felt a draw to explore the new city she lived in. Her experience at the Blue Moon had showed her that there was a deep cultural river in the city that she hadn't even put her big toe into yet. “You should check out that ...
