... her thinking. But the tequila in her bl**d had put a dark twist on her frame of mind. She went from troubled to fussy and straight into bitchy. People around her all seemed to be either in her way or not doing enough. Clerks were slow and stupid. Drivers were ignorant and inconsiderate. She began to think that another margarita was the only cure. She bought a small bronze statue in small shop just off of Frenchman Street and stepped out into the street. Before she'd even had a chance to look left or right, she smashed right into an old woman carrying a cart. They both tumbled to the ground and although Haden's purchase had been put inside a bag with bubble wrap, the loud clunking sound she heard told her that the statue was probably damaged. The old lady, Haden saw, looked homeless. The cart she was pushing had a cornucopia of junk pouring out of the top. Her clothes were a mishmash of things that even a thrift store wouldn't carry. Her skin was as black as ground coffee, her teeth were all gone but one. Her face was so wrinkled that her eyes and nose were almost lost in a sea of folds. Haden stumbled to her feet, clutching her bag. “Oh my god, will you look where you are going! And take a shower for God's sake. I'd ask you to pay for the damage you probably just caused but I'm sure that would be pointless.” The old lady just glared. Haden stared back, fueled by her anger and having a target for it. Then the old woman, her white hair poking out in all directions in long ...
... greasy dreadlocks, said something. At first, Haden thought she'd mumbled or was d***k. But then college came back to her and she realized that the woman had spoken to her in French. “What did you say?” Haden stepped forward, her anger rising further. The old lady stared, then spit at the ground between Haden's feet. Then she turned and tottered off. Haden stood, glaring at her, unsure of what to do. Part of her wanted to beat the woman. She'd never hit anyone in her life, but at that moment, she wanted to take her bronze statue and crush the old woman's skull with it. But somehow, that image passing through her mind, made Haden paused. “Oh my God,” she said quietly. Why was she so angry? It was nothing more than a simple accident and yet she'd escalated to a point where she envisioned killing a poor old lady. What the hell was wrong with her? She headed home. When she arrived, she opened all the d****s around the house, letting the sunlight in. Putting the bronze statue of the horse on the center of the living table, she sat across from it and stared at it. The conversation between the two s****rs played out over and over in her mind. So did her anger at the old woman. “What was it she said to me?” Haden whispered, trying to recall her French. For some reason, it felt important to know. Haden stared at the statue and thought about right and wrong until Andrew came home from work.Chapter 16 That night, Haden dreamed that she walked naked through her backyard, through the swampy ...
