I stepped into the lift and swore bitterly. I was so wrapped up in my own anger, that I hadn't noticed the two older ladies each with a bundle of files held against their chests, already occupying the elevator. As I stood there fuming, I felt stony eyes boring into me and when I turned around to face my antagonist, I saw the older of the two look at me very disapprovingly. Realising how things looked, I swallowed and apologized for my behaviour. All to no avail unfortunately. Having decided I was an uncouth yobbo and therefore past salvation, she ignored my attempts at atonement and continued to give me the evil eye. Realising I couldn't and wouldn't change her mind, I turned to face the opposite wall, but out the corner of my eye I could see the younger of the two hiding her smirk behind the bundle of files. She was obviously having difficulty keeping a straight face. I beamed my friendliest smile and winked at her. Yobbo, yeah that's me! To everybody's relief the lift started moving. While we descended, one could hear a pin drop as we all stood in typical British politeness, but the couple of times I looked at the reflection of my fellow passengers, amused, attractive green eyes stared back at me. "You're welcome," I replied sarcastically, "Anytime!" but gave up because my remarks fell on deaf ears. Mrs Disapproving was gone. I shrugged away my bitterness and looked at the only other remaining occupant and asked politely, "Lobby?" The owner of the beautiful emerald green eyes, gave me another friendly look and nodded.. "Thank you." Her voice was low, and gravelly, like a hardened smoker, but on the whole it suited her. I pressed the button for the lobby and watched the doors close and then the lift jolted as it began to move. About three seconds later, somewhere between the seventh and sixth floors, a weird sound from outside our small metal box and then everything, and I mean absolutely everything went black. A short scream sounded beside me, and in the pitch black, I couldn't help feeling the hair on the back of my neck rising. "Shush," I hissed angrily, my heart racing. The lights flickered on and off twice and then died out altogether. There was a click, a quiet zooming noise and then a tiny low wattage bulb situated in the ceiling burst into life. Due to the red coloured opaque glass cover, the lift was filled with a soft reddish glow which seemed brighter as it was reflected in the mirrored walls. Like a cat who blinks ...
