For some time Cindy had been feeling very unattractive. She had just turned 46 and had put on 10 pounds over the last 6 months. Additionally she and her husband Doug hadn't been intimate for a while, more than a year. Part of the reason was they had been married for 28 years and had fallen into a rut. The other part was that over the last five years Doug had taken to drinking rather heavily. Every week night they would eat dinner, then sit in the livingroom and watch TV. As they did Doug would drink whiskey until he fell asleep. Half the time Cindy would wake him just before she went to bed. The other half, when she couldn't or didn't want to wake him, she would throw a blanket over him and let him sleep in his chair. So it wasn't any wonder she was feeling very unattractive. To add to that she was the oldest female in the office. All the other girls were just that, girls. The oldest was 26 and the youngest was 22 and all of them (at least to Cindy) looked like models. In comparison Cindy felt fat and dowdy. All that changed when Ian arrived in the office. He was 38 years old, average height (5' 9") and average in looks, except for his eyes, which were sea green and his smile, which was wide, filled with humor and contagious. Cindy watched it transpire and sighed thinking it would be fun to flirt, if she was pretty like the others. Two weeks after he was hired Ian walked into the break room as Cindy was making tea. The room was empty except for the two of them. Cindy always picked a time when it was empty to make her tea so she didn't have to hear the girls talking about boyfriends, sex lives flirting and the like. "Hi." Ian said,"You're Cindy right? I haven't had the chance to introduce myself." Cindy smiled and said,"Yes, I'm Cindy. I'm sorry I haven't introduced myself to you either." Ian smiled and said in a conspiratorial manner,"How could you with all those girls trying to flirt with me?" Cindy was a bit amused at his comment, but a second later was shaken as Ian said,"They're all cute, but the prettiest one in the office has finally introduced herself." Cindy stood with her mouth agape trying to absorb the comment he had just made. Ian poured his coffee cup full, smiled at her with a twinkle in his eye and said as he turned to leave,"So Cindy, I hope we get to talk more later." For the rest of the day Cindy turned his comment over and over in her mind. By the end of the day she was totally confused. Why did he say that?
