CHAPTER 10 We spent most of the next week preparing for our trip north and our life together. First, I took Cinda shopping, buying her clothes she’d need to fill out her wardrobe. I’d buy her more once we were up in Indiana where I could have Kenny’s girlfriend help her. I bought her a purse and wallet and gave her money, telling her, “You shouldn’t have to come to me for money. I’ll get you an ATM card once we get settled and can get to my bank.” We also bought her a laptop. I thought it might come in handy once we were in school. I used mine all the time. Thursday night we were invited to dinner with Momma and Monroe. I was a bit surprised when Grandma met us there. It was a squeeze around Momma’s old table, but we made it. “I hope you realize, Ty that Lucinda can’t cook a lick,” Momma told me as she placed a huge platter of fried chicken on the table. “That’s okay--I could stand to lose a few pounds.” Everyone just stared; it was pretty well known that I had barely any fat on my body. “Okay, I guess I’ll just have to suffer.” Cinda punched my shoulder, but it might as well have been a feather. “I think you should just be quiet and eat Momma’s chicken.” That’s exactly what I did. We all talked and joked until it was time to go. Cinda and I were leaving early in the morning. She hugged Momma and then Monroe and I did the same then we turned and left, moving into our future. Cinda stood at my truck looking back at her family’s home. “Look at this place, Ty. It’s a tiny run ...
... down place, but I love it. I’ll miss it and I’ll miss Momma and Monroe.” “You can talk with them every day if you want.” “No…I need to spend my time with you. That’s what I’ve wanted for so long. I’ve always known that this moment was coming. It’s just a little overwhelming.” She sat in the truck and I closed the door. A minute later we were gone. We were up early the following morning at five. Grandma was up, too even though we’d told her to sleep in. She made us a good breakfast while I loaded the small cooler she’d given us with some Cokes, ice, and sliced veggies—green peppers and carrot sticks—for snacks. I placed it on the floor right behind the console and returned to eat. Saying good-bye to Grandma was harder than I’d thought. “I love you, Grandma—you’re the best.” I hugged and kissed her and stepped aside for Cinda. “You take care, Granddaughter…you, too Ty.” She stood and waved in the brightening day as I drove away. Given my druthers I’d stay in Louisiana, but the school situation was intolerable. The newspapers had articles and editorials almost every day telling about the changes and excoriating the Republicans in the state government for destroying the public schools. Driving with Cinda was a lot different than driving by myself. We talked about everything—books, music, even about making love. She wanted to know what I liked; that was easy—I liked everything she did with me. I asked her what she liked. “Everything,” she replied with a smile. Then I asked her about ...
