Gina, Walter, and Artie watched through the window as Jessie greeted a large black man on the front porch steps. He had just crawled out of a red semi parked in front of the house and upon meeting Jessie at the steps, presented her with a bouquet of roses. All the voyeurs sighed in unison as Jessie’s naked buttocks peaked out from under her short night shirt when she reached up to hug the man. Gina softly spoke, “That is so sweet, what a good friend he must be.” “Well I can see he knows how to treat a lady,” Artie chimed in. Both Gina and Walter glanced quickly at Artie for they knew he was gay. “I would want to be treated that way!” Artie defended himself. Walter agreed, “The flowers are a nice touch.” “Who would have thought a trucker could be such a gentleman?” added Artie. Gina agreed. She thought it was about time her best friend had a nice surprise. She had orchestrated this whole event for her. Jessie had been crushed when her husband could not be with her on their wedding anniversary. Mark, Jessie’s husband, was on a long haul and due to some unfortunate circumstances, was going to miss the special occasion that Jessie had planned for them. They all sat around talking and getting more acquainted. Conversation did turn toward the absence of Jessie’s husband. In what seemed a defense of Mark, Badger added some of his own experiences which were very similar. Walter seemed extremely engrossed in what Badger was explaining. While there was plenty of room to sit on the couch, Walter sat on his knees at Gina’s feet. Badger thought that was kind of peculiar, but he let it go. Now Artie, on the other hand, made Badger quite nervous. Jessie shared her thoughts that lenders seemed to prey on truckers, and others for that matter, holding the repossession card over their heads at all times. Badger whole heartedly agreed, but he also went on to say, they all knew that before they went into trucking. Jessie added that she had shared some ideas with her director that could be a win-win for both the lender and their customers. But time after time, she was brushed off. Walter scowled. Tired of all the ‘business’ talk, Gina stood up, “Look at the time everyone, if you two are going to make the opera, we better get moving!” Everyone ...
