Ouch! That was all Charlie could think as she felt the hockey ball crash into her head. She had been running towards it, trying to block the shot, but she certainly hadn’t intended on doing it like that. And that was all she could remember about the moment that changed her life. The rest of the players and the small crowd watched, however, as her momentum carried her about another two strides forward before she landed on the floor in a crumpled heap. The game was stopped immediately and the coach ran onto the field with the first-aid kit whilst a worried- looking group of players gathered around Charlie where she had landed on the ground. A worried murmur went around the crowd as Charlie lay motionless and received medical attention. Holly Parker was the star player in the Queens Port Blues Hockey Club. She wasn’t tall but she was quick, had great skill and was brave. She has been the best player in her team at school and at University. Coming back had been hard for Holly after her years at University and she was slowly becoming more bitter about it and beginning to think she would be trapped in the uninspiring, hopeless place for the rest of her life. The possibility of promotion had therefore come to mean a lot to Holly, it was her route to something less mundane and exciting. The last game of the season had finally arrived and Holly was determined that the Blues would win it. They were playing the second placed team who were the only team to have beaten them all year. Holly remembered that game all too well, she had a running-battle with the central midfielder of the other team and was embarrassed when she gave away a short-corner that her rival scored from. Holly got angry just remembering the game. She knew she should have scored herself at least once then right at the end of the game she got in the way of a shot, the ball hit her leg and then it was a short-corner. She also remembered the stupid blonde with the big wide green eyes, pouty lips and cheeky grin. When she first saw her in the warm-up, she thought it was going to be another easy win, and ...
