Isla was late. She hurried down the busy road, dodging pedestrians and suppressing the urge to hail a taxi. It was a hot day and even though it was evening, the sky was still bright and beautiful, the air thick with traffic fumes. Isla could feel her sheer blouse sticking to her back and she comforted herself with the thought of a cool shower as soon as she got home. Despite the rush, she loved the city on days like these. The smell of petrol and nail polish competed with the scent of fresh cut grass. The park she rushed through was an oasis in the midst of urban chaos, a safe haven from the commuters and high-rises and if she’d had time, she might have stopped for a game of chess with one of the regulars. The bag on her shoulder was cumbersome and heavy, stuffed to bursting point with files from the office. It wasn’t going to be a lazy weekend but at least tonight she could blow off some steam. It was her fifth wedding anniversary and despite the fact her husband Jeff hadn’t mentioned the occasion, she knew he would have something special planned. Her shoulder ached with the weight of the bag and a hundred metres down the road, she could see her bus was already at the stop. She broke into a half-run, feeling almost comical in her high heels. She had to step into the road to get past them all and by that time, the queue for the bus had diminished considerably. She cursed her boss for delaying her those precious few minutes. Her shoulder was almost numb from the weight of the bag and strands of long blonde hair had escaped her ponytail and stuck to her face. She ran faster, one last desperate push to get to the finish line but her attention was so focused on the bus that she didn’t see a man emerging from a side street. Half a foot shorter than him, and maybe half his weight, she knew she was going to fall even in that split second before collision. The ground came rushing up to meet her, hard concrete slabs splattered with chewing gum and cigarette butts. She managed to catch herself on her hands, but before she could even think of getting up, she heard the bus pull away from the kerb and though it should have been a minor disappointment, she felt utterly defeated. “Are you okay?” Her co-collider’s hands grasped her upper arms, helping her to her feet. She followed the hands up bare, brown arms to broad shoulders and a handsome face. “I’m fine,” Isla said, a little more brusquely than she’d intended. She took her bag from him. “Thank you,” ...
